# Create an Agent

> Learn what an agent is and explore the 4 distinct ways to create your voice AI in Vaani

An agent is your configured voice AI - it possesses a unique personality (defined by its prompt), a distinct vocal tone, dynamic variables that get populated at call time, and external tools it can execute mid-conversation.

When you create an agent, you receive a UUID `agent_id` that is used in every API call, telephony setup, and web call integration.

> [!NOTE]
>
> **Prerequisite:** You need a Vaani account. If you haven't signed up yet, head to [Create an Account](https://docs.vaanivoice.ai/getting-started/create-account.md) first.

## 4 Ways to Create an Agent

Vaani offers four distinct creation paths tailored to your workflow and technical requirements:

> **[Choose from Template](https://docs.vaanivoice.ai/getting-started/create-agent/template.md)**
>
> **Quick-start.** Explore a vast variety of pre-configured, real-world industry use cases with ready-made prompts and voice personas.

> **[Vibe-Code Your Agent](https://docs.vaanivoice.ai/getting-started/create-agent/vibe-code.md)**
>
> **Prompt-to-Agent.** Tell Vaani what your agent should do in plain English and see AI architect your voice loop in seconds.

> **[Build from Scratch](https://docs.vaanivoice.ai/getting-started/create-agent/scratch.md)**
>
> **Blank canvas.** Design complex, multi-branch dialog flows, custom state machines, and strict compliance rules from the ground up.

> **[Import from JSON](https://docs.vaanivoice.ai/getting-started/create-agent/import-json.md)**
>
> **GitOps / Infrastructure-as-Code.** Upload or paste a JSON configuration to automate agent deployment across environments.

## Comparison: Which Method Should You Use?

| Method | Best For | Technical Skill | Time to First Call |
| - | - | - | - |
| **Choose from Template** | Customer support, real estate, clinic intake, sales | Beginner | \~2 minutes |
| **Vibe-Code Your Agent** | Custom ideas, rapid prototyping, iterative prompting | Beginner to Intermediate | \~30 seconds |
| **Build from Scratch** | Complex multi-turn state machines, compliance-heavy scripts | Intermediate to Advanced | \~10 minutes |
| **Import from JSON** | GitOps pipelines, CI/CD, reproducing existing agents | Developer / DevOps | Instant |

## What is an Agent?

Behind the scenes, every voice agent combines three core technologies into a sub-second audio loop:

```mermaid theme={null}
graph LR
  User([Caller / User]) -->|Audio Stream| Ears[Ears: STT]
  Ears -->|Text Tokens| Brain[Brain: LLM + Tools]
  Brain -->|Response Stream| Mouth[Mouth: TTS]
  Mouth -->|Audio Stream| User
  Brain -.-> KB[(Knowledge Base)]
  Brain -.-> Tools[External APIs]
```

1. **Ears (Speech-to-Text)**: Transcribes the caller's spoken voice with low latency and accents support (e.g. Deepgram Nova-2, Sarvam).
2. **Brain (LLM & Logic)**: Understands intent, accesses Knowledge Base context, calls tools, and generates responses.
3. **Mouth (Text-to-Speech)**: Converts generated text into hyper-realistic, human-sounding speech with natural pauses and emotion.

## Understanding the `agent_id`

Once you save an agent created through any method, you will see your **Agent ID** displayed on the agent overview page.

> [!WARNING]
>
> The `agent_id` is a UUID (e.g. `8cf3373e-eb6f-4b4c-9f3c-324a56a91147`). Always use this UUID in your API requests - never use the human-readable display name.

## Next Steps: Configure Your Agent

Once your agent is created, dive into configuring its behavior across the 6 core pillars:
